Our Mission
Our
mission is to graduate a diverse group of young adults who are
self-directed, intellectually engaged, and possess a strong sense of
personal and civic responsibility. The Capital City academic program is
based on a rigorous combination of independent and collaborative
learning in a community that is inclusive and democratic.
Key Program Features
- Builds on Capital City's eight-year track record of success with elementary and middle school students
- Implements the Expeditionary Learning school design, in which teachers and students undertake long-term, in-depth investigations involving authentic research, community fieldwork, service, and technology
- Engages all students in the mastery of rigorous academic and character standards through a college-prep curriculum
- Incorporates all aspects of diversity into the social and academic curricula and utilizes the opportunities provided by a diverse student body
- Requires 8th, 10th, and 12th grade students to present and defend their portfolios of work to a faculty panel
- Works with seniors to design individualized learning expeditions that may involve internships, enrollment in college course(s), or study elsewhere in the U.S. or abroad to study a chosen topic in depth
- Provides a program of differentiated instruction to challenge and support all learners through low staff-student ratio, small group and one-on-one instruction, and intensive subject area reviews and extensions.
- Provides comprehensive inclusion support to English Language Learners and students with special learning needs
- Places students in small advisory groups that meet daily with a faculty advisor for academic support, work on social skills/issues, and participation in community service
- Offers free extra-curricular activities including competitive team sports, arts clubs, and after-school homework support
- Fosters a strong professional community for educators with three hours per week and two weeks in the summer dedicated to professional development
Admissions
As
a charter school, the Capital City Upper School is open to all DC
students. Admission is by random lottery, in the event that
applications exceed available spaces. Preference is given to graduates
of the Capital City Lower School. Incoming students will be given a
diagnostic test after they have been admitted to the school. To apply click here.
