Seeking 6th and 9th Grades Founding Inclusion Teachers

Capital City is looking for two dedicated and talented inclusion teachers, one for 6th Grade and one for 9th Grade, to develop our new Upper School.  The school will open with grades 6-9 and extend to 12th grade by 2011. An Inclusion Teacher is responsible for delivering instruction to identified students, including English Language Learners (ELLs) and students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), and working to develop and manage a classroom environment that supports differentiated instruction and student progress.  Capital City serves a diverse population and seeks a teaching staff reflective of our student body. Some of the many and varied responsibilities of inclusion teachers are:

  • Developing and delivering specialized instruction in the classroom during academic periods designed to help students meet grade-level standards achieve goals on IEPs (Individualized Education Plans) or ILPs (Individualized Literacy Plans, for English Language Learners)
  • Serving as the primary contact with families regarding service delivery for English Language Learners and students with IEPs
  • Developing ILPs for English Language Learners and IEPs for special-needs students with teacher input
  • Ensuring the records for each identified student are up to date and well-organized, and contain necessary progress notes and assessments
  • Leading a weekly Consult Time with classroom teaching teams to review the progress of individual students
  • Modifying assessments and classwork for students with special needs
  • Regularly assessing student progress against IEP or ILP goals and using data to plan for instruction
  • Supporting students with completing portfolios and meeting passage requirements
  • Meeting and planning regularly with team that includes a Humanities Teacher, a Math Teacher, a Science Teacher, a Teaching Fellow, and an Inclusion Teacher who teach the same 50 students
  • Serving as an advisor to 10 students that involves leading a daily advisory, helping to develop the curriculum, and taking the lead in meeting the social, emotional, and academic needs of advisees
  • Collaborating with staff and students to implement consistent structures and develop traditions at our new school
  • Attending a summer institute and weekly professional development with the entire staff

The current Lower School was founded in 2000 and serves students in grades PK-8.  Capital City is recognized as one of the city’s leading charter schools and as a national model for school reform.  In 2007 Capital City had the highest reading and math scores among District charter elementary schools.  Capital City implements the Expeditionary Learning model in tandem with the common principles of the Coalition of Essential Schools (CES).  Through Expeditionary Learning teachers craft expeditions that incorporate projects, research, fieldwork and service to support students in meeting rigorous standards. The CES principles emphasize equity, depth over breadth, student leadership, and authenticity.  Capital City’s program also emphasizes a strong social curriculum, a commitment to diversity, a comprehensive English/language arts program, a constructivist approach to math and science, and the integration of arts into the curriculum.  Capital City uses the inclusion model with a school-wide focus on differentiating instruction and supporting students with learning needs.  There is a strong focus on professional development and a collegial atmosphere ideal for teacher learning and professional growth.

We are looking for individuals who possess:

  • Experience working with special needs students in an inclusive setting
  • Experience in writing and monitoring Individualized Education Plans (IEPs)
  • Experience working with adolescents and families in urban environments
  • Strong knowledge of pedagogy and experience teaching in a constructivist way
  • Proven ability to work as a member of a team
  • Strong leadership capabilities and an interest in teacher leadership
  • A commitment to their own learning and professional development
  • Diverse talents and expertise and a willingness to share with students and staff
  • Ability to speak Spanish or a desire to learn


At least two of the following are required:

  • Masters degree in special education or education
  • 2+ years of full-time teaching experience
  • Standard teaching certification
